Lake Garfield is a large, 262-acre lake The average depth is 16 feet and maximum depth is 31 feet. The water is transparent to 11 feet and the bottom is a mixture of boulders, clay and mud. Fishing is decent, with the following 12 species noted: smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, rainbow trout, chain pickerel, yellow perch, white perch, pumpkinseed, bluegill, brown bullhead, rock bass, white sucker and golden shiner.  Traditionally the lake has been stocked with trout each spring.  Lake Garfield is drawn down every year from about mid-October to mid-February. 

Monterey has a permanent population of about 1,000 people, and several thousand part-time residents who call Monterey their second home.  Monterey is a spectacularly beautiful Berkshire town with a strong commitment to conservation and as a home for artists. Lake Garfield, Lake Buel and the Bidwell House museum are just a few highlights of this wonderful town.
